How to use this calculator
- Measure the project and enter the requested dimensions. Use actual product dimensions where the form asks for them.
- Replace the sample assumptions with the spacing, stock lengths, coverage, or prices that apply to your plan.
- Review the result, assumptions, and any limitation notice. Save the project locally or export a dated PDF for discussion.
This calculator does not verify loads, spans, soil, frost depth, connections, product approvals, or local code. Use a qualified local professional for decisions that affect safety.
Calculation methodology
Risers are rounded up from total rise divided by target riser height. Actual equal riser height is total rise divided by the resulting count; treads are one fewer for a stair ending at the deck.
Intermediate values retain decimal precision. Physical purchase units are rounded up only at the purchasing step, so the tool does not silently understate whole boards, bags, boxes, or containers.
Worked example
A 36 in rise with a 7.25 in target becomes 5 equal 7.2 in risers and 4 treads before local review.
Material and measurement considerations
- Measure finished-surface to finished-surface.
- Landings, nosings, guards, and headroom are outside this quantity estimate.
- Stringer geometry and support require verification.
Common mistakes
- Rounding each riser independently.
- Counting a top landing as another tread.
- Assuming a target value is code compliant everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Are these stairs code compliant?
Not necessarily. Verify the entire assembly with your local authority and a qualified professional.
Sources and limitations
The estimator uses your measurements, standard geometry, unit conversion, and product data you enter. Product coverage, gaps, fastening, and installation details should come from the current manufacturer documentation for the exact material. Structural and permit requirements must be confirmed for the project location. No live price feed, fabricated standard, or universal structural rule is used.
